St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

Now that I have your attention, let me tell you about St. Croix and why you might want to make it your next vacation. St. Croix was a travel "Hot Spot" in the 80's. In 1989 Hurricane Hugo blew the island apart, and travel agents started sending their clients to other destinations that had a little better accommodations than just a piece of tin under a coconut tree. Several other hurricanes did some damage too and St. Croix took time to recover. The more adventurous types discovered St. Croix and fell in love with it's people, history, and architecture.

Let's be honest. Lot's of places have the same crystal clear water, beautiful beaches, and wonderful diving - so why St. Croix? Because St. Croix is a Real Island - it's the type of island you might have found 20 - 30 years ago. St. Croix is not packed with tourists (please don't bring any large crowds with you), and due to a limited port, you will not be trampled by waves of tourists departing the floating cities.

You might also be surprised at how polite the locals are. When I first came here I would enter a shop to be greeted with "Good Morning". My response would be something like - "Hi, where's the film?" It took a little time, but I eventually discovered that a more appropriate response is - "Good Morning" too. I even started adding little things like "How are you today?" When was the last time you sat in a doctors office and someone came in and said "Good afternoon" to everyone in the office, and everyone in the office says "Good afternoon" back? When you are stopped in traffic no one tries to get in front of you - they wave you in front of them. It feels good - you can try this at home.
