We Love our Sister Islands!

However, like all brothers
and sisters.........
sometimes they can get to be a pain in the ass!
I had to go to St. Thomas and ended up talking to a woman from St. John. I asked her what she thought of St. Croix. She said, "I have no desire what so ever to go to St. Croix". I asked her when the last time was she had been to St. Croix and she said, "I've never been there". Hmmmm.
The St. Croix business community applied for a grant to install security cameras in the downtown areas. The other 2 islands somehow got included, and it was time for the cameras to be installed. Where were the cameras installed first? Not St. Croix....they were installed on St. John. That seems to be the way things work around here.
The Avis, our local newspaper, is advocating a "Divorce" from the other islands and there are partitions at various spots around the island. Most of the territory's income comes from St. Croix (according to the Avis, 70.9%). But, the political power is in St. Thomas and the money gets spent there.
The people here generally think it is a good idea, but really don't think it can actually happen. But maybe it can. We don't have to secede from the union, but we need to demand more control over the money that is generated here and decisions that affect out island. The V.I. Tourism Department believes that we should market the Virgin Islands as a whole. But we don't get the same consideration as the other 2 islands. You have St. Thomas - St. John, and the Red-Headed Step-Child and we deserve a bigger piece of the tourism pie.
I love watching our political representatives on TV. They get wrapped up in how important they are, but I have a hard time seeing what they are trying to do for St. Croix. Keep a good thing going?? Right, good for them, bad for us. It is time for the people here to realize that the fish fry put on by those running for office only satisfies the hunger for one day. By being in charge of our own affairs, and voting for people who truly represent us, we can keep a chicken in the pot.
