Ya know, you just have to take reviews with a grain of salt. At first glance it seems like a good idea - Take advice from people who have already been to the place that you are thinking about going to. The problem is that there are people on the web who seem to just like to hear themselves talk (hey, watch it!). One of the first clues to such people is when they start their review with something like "I am a well-seasoned traveler and have been to all the islands all over the planet." I have seen some reviews of St. Croix that I think are funny and I will be bringing others to you as I find them.

I have seen this review about every Hotel and Villa on St. Croix. The review usually has something positive to say about the place, but invariably ends with the statement that they will never stay there again and suggest that the person in the other review, "must have been smoking something", when they said how much they enjoyed their stay. It's about those damn ants. These little buggers are determined. I actually saw a line of ants, looking like they were auditioning for a role in the movie ANTS, carrying a scorpion over their heads. The ones people complain about are not the big ants that you are used to. They are tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, little ants (and are actually fun to watch if you wear glasses and don't have them on). But you see, the reviews are not going to make the ants go away, and there is not much else that will either. All the accommodations have refrigerators, put your food and sweets in there and you won't have a problem. Their presence doesn't mean that the manager of your hotel is a dirty person. It just shows that the you are smart enough to find a place for your vacation that is full of life. Get over it! You're in the Caribbean.

I saw a review from someone who stayed at Cottages By The Sea and felt the need to pan the place. Of course it started with the usual "I am a well seasoned traveler, blah, blah, blah". It went on to say how they stayed at Cottages By The Sea and hated it, and then went to the Buccaneer which they would highly recommend. But what they conviently forgot to mention these "well seasoned travelers" was that they paid 4 times the amount to stay at the Buccaneer. There is nothing wrong with Cottages By The Sea, it has simple, inexpensive accommodations with rooms between $100 and $200/night. It also has one of the nicest beaches you will find anywhere in the world. It just isn't fair to compare it to the Buc which has rooms that cost as much as $800/night (and worth it). Come on folks, let's be fair.

Now here is one of my favorites. And it was written by a travel writer. He probably spent the week laying on the beach and at the last minute remembered that he wouldn't get paid if he went back with absolutely nothing. So he wrote the standard stuff, I don't remember if he put a positive or negative slant on it, but ended it with something that let me know that he wasn't working very hard. He said that he went out on the Big Beard boat to Buck Island and the rum punch was "watered down", implying that it was done so to save money. I have bought Cruzan Rum (great rum) for as little as $2.50/bottle. I just called the local store and a carton of punch sells for $3.25/carton. No my friend, unless it is done for safety reasons, there is very little incentive to water down rum punch here you know.
